From the South

Take the turn off from the A1M signed Northallerton and Bedale. At the small roundabout take the second exit, signed ‘Bedale and Leyburn’ (not Bedale, unless you plan to call in Bedale for supplies or to visit). This is the Bedale bypass, taking you to the A684 which travels up the dale to Leyburn. From there, directions from North and South are the same (see below).

From the North

Take A1 South and get off it at the Northallerton sign but you are heading for Leeming Bar/Bedale (signed from the exit). From there, directions from North and South are the same. Bedale to Leyburn is on the A684. After Leyburn (where you may want to stop to pick up provisions) continue up Wensleydale on the A684 in the Hawes direction. It is approx. 5 miles to Redmire. At Wensley, turn right off the A684 to Preston-under-Scar, Redmire and Castle Bolton. Descend into Redmire village after two sections of sharp bends and going under the Railway. At the village green, continue as if going out of the village (do not turn right towards the Bolton Arms pub) then follow the topographical map – we are number 25 on the map. Go up the cart track in front of individual houses Pencraig, Mill Race Cottage and Flax Mill and park on the gravelled area when the cart track comes to a low wall and apparent dead end.

From the West

You will be coming along the A684 from the Hawes direction. You can choose to cut across the river at Aysgarth (with a view of the Falls) and approach Redmire from the Carperby direction. This brings you past Bolton Castle on your left (to the North of the road) and is a spectacular sight. After the castle you are only a mile from the village. Passing Swan Farm on the left you come to a row of bungalows, also on the left and a 90 degree LH bend in the road, entering Redmire. Facing you after 50 yards is Polly Miller’s cottage.  You need to turn left at the Redmire village hall to turn your car round, approaching the cart track to Flax Mill from the North, it is too sharp a bend otherwise.  Double back on your route passing Old Hogra Farm on your left.  Then take a left fork, up the gravel cart track past Pencraig, Mill Race Cottage and finally Flax Mill.

If not crossing the river at Aysgarth, carry on, on the A684 west, through West Witton until you get to Wensley – then turn left on the Preston-under-Scar and Redmire road – same directions as ‘From the East’ above from there on – about 4 miles to Redmire from that junction.

From the East

If you are East of the A1, make your way to the Leeming Bar/ Bedale junction of the A1 and follow directions as for South and North (above).
